Did you know that reading increases your child's learning potential, confidence and ability to understand right across the curriculum? It helps to.....
- Improve concentration and memory
- Expands vocabulary and strengthens writing abilities
- Enhances knowledge
- Increases imagination and creativity
At Stanley Green we love reading and because we love reading we have a variety of different ways that your child can grow their superhero powers to love reading as much as we do! We would love to show you our reading initiatives. Please click on our 'exclusive' Reading Superheroes above to read about each character.
A book a day keeps boredom away!
To ensure that children are motivated to read, and their confidence rises, we are encouraging children to independently choose different books daily to take home. Children will take home a book within the phase of phonics that they are secure in. Children will be able to read 95% of the words within the text. Our books are grouped by phonic phase:
Cat Goat Frog Snake Friendly Fish
We would like all children to read at least 5 times a week for 10 minutes a day. Please record this in your child’s reading record. Your child’s home reading log will be taken in each Monday to celebrate the reading that has taken place at home. If your child has read 5 times in a week, they will receive a sticker from their class teacher. When a child reads in class, the class teacher will write a comment in their reading record. Children who read 5 times per week are entered in to our weekly raffle. A child from each year group is then picked to receive a prize from the box.
‘The more you read, the more you know, the more you learn, the more places you will go!’ ‘Dr Seuss’
Reading is dreaming with open eyes!
Each week the children will get to visit the school library. During this time, the children will be able to choose a book that they can take home to share with you. This may be a book that not all words can be read independently, but can be shared together. Children will need to bring the library book back before they can take a new one home.
Your child’s library sessions is:
Busy Bees Thursday |
Ladybirds Friday |
Rabbits Wednesday |
Squirrels Wednesday |
Sharks Monday |
Whales Monday |
‘Every child is a reader, they just haven’t found their favourite book yet!’
Every day the children take part in D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read). This is a time where children can share books with each other, or listen to a story read by the class teacher. Children are able to select books to read from their class book corner, or bring in a book from home. All members of Stanley Green take part in D.E.A.R time, including adults in the offices!
Each half term we will read a variety of books by the same author. We will read these books during story time at the end of the day and start to think about which stories are our favourite. We will also read them lots of times so that we are confident to retell the story to our grownups at home. By the time we leave Stanley Green we will have learnt about 18 different authors!
The authors we study are:
Reception | Year 1 | Year 2 |
Alan Ahlberg | Judith Kerr | Oliver Jeffers |
Mick Inkpen | Claire Freedman | Roald Dahl |
David Mckee | Jill Murphy | Dick King Smith |
Nick Butterworth | Anthony Browne | David Walliams |
Nick Sharratt | Roger Hargreaves | Michael Morpurgo |
Julia Donaldson | Hannah Shaw | Francesca Simon |
We are really looking forward to seeing how our new initiatives help motivate our children to read. If you have any questions or need support, please do get in touch with Mrs Gray and Mrs Perry – Our School Reading Champions.
